Robert Kuwałek

(1966-204)

The sad passing on 5 June 2014 of Polish historian Robert Kuwałek
in Lvov (Ukraine) has filled everyone who knew him with shock
and sadness. Robert was a true giant in the field of research into
the Holocaust. He wrote books, gave lectures and devoted his life
to educate and explain one of the darkest periods in man s recent history.
He was passionate about honouring the memory of the destruction
of Jewish life and culture. His expertise and deep understanding shone
a light in the darkness, he was patient and warm and cared
deeply about building educational links between Poland and the Ukraine.
He devoted his life to educating young and old about the Holocaust,
and was highly respected by all those who came into contact with him.
On a personal note, he was a massive supporter of the ARC group,
who studied the Aktion Reinhardt camps of Bełżec, Sobibór
and Treblinka, and he was a co-founder of the Holocaust
Education and Research Team (H.E.A.R.T.) and he provided
extensive material from his personal archive, as well as his expertise and
guidance. We always appreciated this, and its right we thank him for that.
Robert was an accomplished tour guide, and I will never forget
the tours we took together in Belżec, Izbica, Kraków Lublin and Trawniki,
his knowledge about all these places,
connected with the Holocaust was second to none.
His books on the Belżec death camp published in 2010
and his work for the Majdanek Museum in Lublin are a fitting legacy,
and Robert will never be forgotten for his friendship
and willingness to share his love of history, and consummate knowledge.
He is survived by a wife and daughter, and will be greatly missed,
but never forgotten.
We were privileged to know him and proud to call him a friend.
